7-A Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

7-A Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

Large vehicles have a hard time getting in, out and centered in small, perpendicular parking spaces because they lack the maneuverability.

The Who: Large vehicles

The What: Have a hard time getting in, out and centered in small, perpendicular parking spaces

The Why:They lack maneuverability

Testing the Who: No, not all who have large vehicles have this problem, because their vehicles may have better maneuverability.  Also, there maybe someone who is just really good at parking in those small spots.

Testing the What: Not all small perpendicular parking spaces are a problem, because sometimes the roadway is wide enough for someone to swing wide to get that large vehicle centered properly

Testing the Why: Larger vehicles have longer wheel bases and smaller turning angle.

Interview #1
I interviewed a young lady who was fairly new to driving.  Her dad has bought her a mid-sized SUV and when asked about her experience with small perpendicular parking spaces she said she has such an issue with them she finds herself avoiding up-close, crowded spaces and parks far away to avoid possibly hitting the cars on either side of her.  She says it is very hard for her to get into the spots without having a small amount of fear of making a costly mistake.

Interview #2
I interviewed a Mercedes s550 driver. He informed me that when faced with small parking perpendicular parking spaces he will only enter one by a left hand turn so he can swing a bit wider into the space to accomplish a good center.

Interview #3
I interviewed a Ford F-250 pick up driver.  He stated that he was completely unable to get into a small parking space if there were cars on either side.  He simply said it was impossible to navigate the truck into the spot. He stated he stopped trying many years ago and just drove out “into the boonies” of the parking lot and parked taking up two to three spots as he also noted that the small spots were also too short for a pick-up truck.

Interview #4
I interviewed a woman who drove a Ford Focus.  She said she sometimes had a rough time getting out of a small perpendicular parking spot, but only because she usually had larger vehicles on either side of her and she could not see to if anyone was coming down the lane that might hit her as she was backing out. And because those larger vehicles stick out of the parking spots a bit, it caused her to have to continue backing out straight before she could turn the car.  She felt that there should be layers of kinds of parking spots. She felt that there should be small car parking spots, that were designed specifically for small cars, medium sized for regular sized cars and large spots for bigger vehicles.

Interview #5
I interviewed a man driving a Volvo V-70 stationwagon.  He informed me that the turning radius on his car was not good.  While he loved driving his car, he was very uncomfortable parking it. He also reported that he preferred the outskirts of the parking lot to avoid having to park in small spots.  He said that parking in the small spots were not easy.  His car simply would not turn unless he had a lot of swing room.

What do I know about the opportunity that I did not know before?
While I found that there are indeed issues with small perpendicular parking spots, I found that little cars are inhibited too by them.  Not because they are hard to get into, but because they make it harder for smaller cars to get out of when other larger vehicles park next to her.

After I did these interviews, I wish I had been able to talk to an insurance claims person to find out if parking lots with small perpendicular spaces had a higher rate of accidents over the parking lots with larger, angled spaces.

6-A Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

6-A Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

Regulatory Opportunity-1:

This is an opportunity to get more people to vote in certain smaller elections.

A) I found this news article by googling what my Texas legislature approved to go in to regulation this past session.

B) The source shows the opportunity when it states that if a county tries to raise the property taxes more than 3.5% from the previous year, they are forced to hold an election to get approval from the voters.

C) A politician would benefit greatly if on the same ballot as approving/disapproving a possible tax increase was their name for running for a specific office, there would be more people voting, this improving their chances of winning.

D) I think it would be relatively easy to exploit this opportunity.  People don’t just go to the voter’s booth to only vote for one thing.  They feel obligated to fill out the entire ballot.  If a candidate campaigned properly and got his/her name out there for a voter to remember, he would benefit greatly from the opportunity.

Why did I see the opportunity?
I vote regularly, even the smallest of elections. I get so frustrated when I am at the poll before closing and I am only the 300thvoter in an area that houses more than 5000 residents.   It just seemed that with the possibility that there may be more on the ballot that actually affects voters’ pocketbooks they would be at the voter’s booth.

Regulatory Opportunity-2:

This is an opportunity to get data from 401(k)’s of people to give them a basic idea what their monthly payout would be if they needed their retirement fund right then.  Someone would need to gather up that data and calculate it and explain it to people.

A) I found this by looking at the govtracking site and seeing something that piqued my interest.  Anything related to 401(k) is on my radar.

B)Someone has to gather all this data and compute the information to give it to the customer.

C) I believe every single person who has a 401(k) and plans on using it during retirement would benefit from this kind of opportunity.  I think people who are closer to retirement would benefit more though.

D)  I think this would be a hard to exploit opportunity.  People are not going to want to pay for it, on top of the fees they already pay for their 401(k).  I think if someone could develop a plan to give it to the customer via the company that holds the 401(k) would be able to make more off this idea than to go door to door to the people personally.

Why did I see this opportunity?
As someone who is fast approaching retirement, and does not completely understand how much I need, or what the payout would be over time so I would know how much my lifestyle would need to change this really stood out to me.

Economic Trend Opportunity-1

This is an opportunity to run for president!!!!!!

A) I originally saw this on the news (with no sound only words) while in the lunchroom at work.  I came home and looked up my Wall Street Journal subscription to verify this was happening.

B) The very notion that the current president is abusing his power of office by slapping tariffs on items from Mexico when we have a trade agreement in place is just ludicrous to me.  TO me it just proves that ANYONE can be president.

C)Sadly, all democrats who even have the slightest bit of notoriety right now will be benefitting big time with this opportunity.

D) This opportunity is so easy to exploit.  The man is insane, all another candidate has to prove now to exploit this is to just point out how awful Trump is.

Why did I see this opportunity?
I am a department manager in a huge retail box store. Right now, I am running around the store hiking up prices of many items that my company has stated is directly related to tariffs Trump has implemented during his presidency.  I am hyper aware of all the times this man has decided to tariff something, or someone new.

Economic Trend Opportunity-2

This is an opportunity for small house makers to create nice communities.

A) This article kept talking about how housing was one of the reasons people were fleeing big cities.  That a person without a 4-year degree would get paid the same in a small city vs the big cities, but housing was outrageous in the big cities.

B) Everyone needs housing. If a non-degreed person is fleeing because of housing prices then they might stay if someone went out of their way to make small, decently priced homes.

C) As the article states the prototypical customer would be a person with no degree, making a much lower living that middle class, but not in poverty.

D)This would not be easy to exploit.  It would take precise marketing to reach the target customer, and it would require a builder to be very careful with costs, and possibly not even have a wish to get rich off this plan.

Why did I see this opportunity?
As I was reading the article, hearing the housing issue being recited repeatedly I kept thinking of the tiny homes I once wanted to buy, and live in.  In my research of those tiny homes I saw a community up in Oregon that kind of did exactly the opportunity I just wrote about.

5-A- Identifying Local Opportunities

Storm Survey Teams Assess Damage, Confirm 8 Tornadoes Across North and East Texas.

On Wednesday, May 29, 2019 there were 8 tornadoes that were reported in north and east Texas.  The National Weather Service has sent out teams to 5 area counties to confirm a tornado hit, and get the EF scale (enhanced Fujita scale that determines the wind speed and the amount of damage in the area) .  Tarrant county had 2 confirmed tornadoes. An EF-1 with winds up to 90 mph, and an EF-0 with winds at 80 mph.  Rockwall County had one confirmed tornado, EF-0 with 70 mph winds.  Denton county had one confirmed EF-0 tornado with 75 mph winds.  Van Zandt county had 2 tornadoes that were EF-1 with one having 100 mph winds and the other having 90 mph winds.  Kaufman county had the two worst tornados, at EF-2 they had winds of 120-130 mph and 125-130 mph.  Out of all these tornadoes only one person has minor injuries.  Several houses have significant damage and many trees have been uprooted.

The problem:
Determining if there was a tornado that struck, how fast the winds were blowing, and what kind and how much damage and injuries were a result of the tornado.

Who has the problem?
The national weather service has to send properly trained people to determine if there was indeed a tornado.
The people who may have injuries that will need to file for help need to have a tornado confirmation.
The people who receive property damage will need a confirmation of a tornado to file a claim with insurance.
The insurance companies need confirmation of a tornado to help their customers with claims
Businesses that deal in repairs need to know if they need to go to that area to gather up some business .

Bar Owner Accused of Rape Says Bond Conditions Prevent Him from Earning a Living

Israel Espiricueta allegedly raped a woman in his bar, when she was passed out drunk.  The judge on his case required him to stay out of bars, including his own, and wear an ankle GPS monitor as part of his bond conditions. He can only go into his own bar after business hours.  Israel is filing a motion to have the bond conditions modified.  He states that the conditions are preventing him from earning a living.

The problem:
Bond conditions are too strict

Who has the problem?
The man who committed rape cannot earn a living
The woman who was raped, if his bond is modified, she could be in danger maybe.
The lawyer representing the man, if the man is not making money, the lawyer will not get paid.
Other women who may come in contact with this man if his bond is modified.
The bar could be in danger of closing if the man is unable to run it properly, displacing patrons who feel comfortable there.

Plane Makes an Emergency Landing in a Field Near McKinney National Airport

A plane, with the words, “air ambulance” on the side that was carrying two people performed a belly landing about a mile north of the Mckinney National Airport.  The pilot identified himself as a doctor and told authorities that he had lost one of his engines and was forced to make an emergency landing.

The problem:
The plane’s engine went out while the plane was flying.

Who has the problem?
The pilot and the passenger they could have died in the landing.
The people on the ground, who could have been hit by the emergency landing.
The authorities, who have to determine why the plane’s engines failed.
The makers of the plane engine, there might be a common problem that makes them stop mid-flight

Quinlan House Fire Results in Arson Charge, Fire Marshal Says

A house fire appears to have been intentionally set.  An arrest has been made by a resident of the house. The home had major fire damage, but all three residents were unharmed.

The problem:
The house burned down

Who has the problem?
The person charged with arson. It could be a bad call and they could be innocent
The two other residents of the house. They have lost all their stuff.
The police who have to make sure they are right

High Levels Limit Some Activities for Lakegoers

Due to a lot of rain in the metroplex, two local lakes are experiencing higher than normal water levels. This is affecting local boaters, and businesses as the Texas Corps of Engineers have shut down certain parks, ramps and camp grounds.  The Corps of Engineers is trying to relieve the problem and is releasing water.  Area residents and local park goers are warned about wildlife being on the move because of excess waters.

The Problem:
2 local lakes are too high.

Who has the problem?
Residents who could have wildlife coming to their properties and threatening their own animals or children.
Area boaters who could not enjoy the holiday weekend on the lake.
Area businesses that were impacted by loss of customers because the ways to the lake were mostly closed.
The corps of engineers who have to maintain the safety of all involved and only release certain amounts of water in a timely matter.
Wildlife that is being displaced because of the high waters taking away their homes.

Assignment- 4A - Forming an Opportunity Belief

Assignment- 4A- Forming an Opportunity Belief:

My Belief: I feel there may be an opportunity to reverse the sizes of the refrigerator and freezer. Instead of the freezer being the small compartment on the top, or small side, it is the refrigerator that is placed there.  I am always complaining that I have no room in my freezer when I return home with more groceries.  It seems like everything I buy needs to be put in the freezer over the refrigerator. There are many different groups of consumers who would want, or benefit from this.  Young single people, those who prepare a large amount of foods in advance, parents who buy a lot of frozen goods for snacks, meals, etc., people who buy in bulk and need it to keep for a longer period of time.  I believe this need surfaced when cooking from scratch faded away, and so many are dependent on already prepared food that is purchased frozen.  For those unable to find this large freezer with a small refrigerator, they are forced to use up space in a different area of the house and purchase a stand alone freezer, which will have a higher impact on their electric bill.  I am 60% sure that if offered and properly marketed this opportunity exists.

#1: Single woman age 68, on a very strict budget, who does not cook for herself much:
Do you buy more frozen goods or refrigerator goods?
I buy in bulk and split it between the freezer and refrigerator.  I have to do this to make sure nothing goes to waste because it is just me eating the food.
Do you find that you never have enough room in the freezer for all the food you want to store in there?
Yes, I severely limit myself because I simply cannot eat everything fast enough and there is not enough room in the freezer.
Do  you experience this problem frequently or just when you add new food?
I am on a strict budget and can only buy food at certain times of the month.  Obviously I have the problem when I am unloading my groceries and am in the process of separating things between the fridge and freezer. Decisions have to be made because of lack of room.  But I also experience the frustration when something i could not eat fast enough spoils inside the fridge,  and I am out that meal.
Have you ever considered getting another stand alone freezer to give you more time for the food to keep?
I live in a town home, another freezer is not an option for me, I do not have the space for anything extra.
Would you consider having a refrigerator with the sizes of the compartments reversed from the norm?
Cost would be an issue for me, but I would definitely look into it.
Reflection: I never thought about the elderly who are on a fixed income and have to ration out their food supplies.  I also did not consider those who live in places that do not allow for an additional freezer.  I just added a couple of new groups who may need this more.  (I found this person while I was interviewing a young single person and she volunteered to be interviewed too)

#2: Indian Immigrant who lives with her husband, son, daughter-in-law and two very young grandchildren.  She cooks twice a day, every single day of the week:
Do you buy a lot of frozen goods?
I buy only fresh vegetables.  I buy them daily.  I stop by the market every day after work.
Do you use your freezer more, or your refrigerator?
I rarely use my freezer.  Mostly just for ice cream treats, which is a rarity around our house, and for ice.  I have a bigger need for my refrigerator.
You do not freeze any of the cooking that you do, even for big family events where you cook in advance?
I do not.  When you freeze things they do not taste the same to me.  Only fresh.  I do make things in advance, but we store them in the refrigerator only.
Reflection:  I thought for sure as much as she cooked she would use her freezer to keep it.  I admit I was stunned that she barely had anything in her freezer.  I truly thought that someone who cooked this much would surely be a great prototypical customer

#3: 27 year old single male with a college degree, living alone in an apartment who "Cannot cook to save my life":
You tell me you cannot cook, describe a typical trip to the grocery store for you?
I walk into the store and head directly to the frozen food section.  I buy a frozen box of waffles, a box of Jimmy dean breakfast biscuits.  I buy 5-7 frozen dinners of various types for dinner.  I grab a couple cans of frozen orange juice to go with alcoholic beverages. A box of Klondike bars and a pint of ice cream.  My grandmother taught me that I can freeze bread, so I buy extra bread to put a couple loafs in the freezer to take it through the week for sandwiches for lunch.  I then go buy lunch meat, cheese, milk--only a half gallon because I cannot drink the milk fast enough by myself.  I get chips and other snack goods too.
With all these freezer items, do you find yourself playing tetris to get it all in there?
Absolutely I do.  Some weeks I eat out a lot and forget I still the previous week's allotment of frozen goods still in the freezer. I have to make a note to myself before I go to work to make sure to look inside the freezer so when I stop by the store on my way home, I don't make this mistake again---but I still forget.
What do you do to make room for frozen only items in the limited space when you have too much?
I whip out the orange juice and ice cream, if there is any and whip up something to drink and indulge in the dessert.  If those are not in there, I have to cram, remove packaging, or just let something go to waste.  It sucks, but it is the only options I have.
Would you be interested in a bigger freezer compartment and a smaller refrigerator compartment?
Absolutely.  My only issue is that I rent an apartment where the fridge is standard.  I would have to maybe talk to the office to see what could be done to accommodate the "Freezerator" idea.
Reflection:  This person is exactly the kind of person who needs this very idea.  The only down fall might be the apartment that comes with a refrigerator.

Summary:  If it had not been for the bug list I would never have thought I was not the only one who would complain about lack of freezer space.  I actually have an extra freezer but hate that it is in the garage.  I found that the more people I asked (I asked casually, not in interview format, about 6 additional people) the more were up for a bigger freezer compartment.  I believe there is still a market for this idea.  I believe that, because of a person listening in to an interview and giving me excellent thoughts, my idea is bigger than I thought it was.  I do think though, in order for the idea to get off the ground I would need a major brand name to step up and work with me to get this properly advertised to the right people.  I also worry about the apartment issues and how to market it to them to maybe give their tenants the option of which kind of refrigerator they would want in their apartment. I also interviewed my son, who lives at home with me, he was able to tell me why the fridge was bigger than the freezer, and it had nothing to do with it just being that way someone in the old days designed the fridge because we did not have a lot of frozen goods back then.  Apparently it is because there is a balance of the amount of money it costs to keep the fridge side cold from the freezer's output--or something like that.  There might need to be a study done to figure all this out.
I work in retail, so I know that customers must be heard and listened too.  If you just go out and do your own thing and not listen to what it is they want, you risk not getting a single sale.  I think entrepreneurs have to have a balance between listening to what customers want and don't want.  Since they are not really going for the whole world to sale to, I think they can take a little bit away from what the customer wants and put more of what the entrepreneur wants in.  I think that the entrepreneur should listen carefully for key issues they may not have thought about--like me with my son informing me how the refrigerator works.

Assignment 3-A Your Entrepreneurship Story:

Assignment 3-A Your Entrepreneurship Story:

My husband was almost a partner for an entrepreneurship start up business in 2007.  A friend of ours recognized his fantastic talent and asked him to join in with them to do a start up.  We reviewed the business plan, looked into the financials and seriously considered jumping in.  But I am a scaredy-cat.  We have five kids, who at that moment in time were 14, 10, 9, 7 and 6.  It was completely frightening to me to leave a stable good paying job and head into a completely unknown financial situation with 5 young children.  We argued for weeks back and forth because he was so excited about the idea of being his own boss.  In the end, he gave in to my fears and he bowed out of the opportunity.  It created a rift in the friendship between our friend. I have no idea if the idea became a business, or if it did, if they were successful.  From my perspective entrepreneurship is like walking a tight rope between success and failure.  With a family and most especially with kids to feed, clothe and house, it is too risky in my opinion to take that leap.  I view entrepreneurship very negatively and I really have no reason to.  Nothing in my past, either with my family or anyone I personally know, affected me negatively with an entrepreneur, so I have no idea why I feel this way.  I think if the opportunity was available to him today I would still be hesitant.  There is no longer the excuse of young kids, as they are all adults now.  I would struggle to find an excuse to refuse him.  But I know in my heart I would reject it and I would find a way to not let it happen because of the fear of failure and loss of money.

I enrolled in ENT 3003 because it is required for my business degree plan.  I will be brutally honest, I would never have even given this class a glance without being forced to take it.  It is simply because I have no desire to become an entrepreneur.  However, first day of class that was on video, Professor Pryor made me laugh, and I completely enjoyed the lecture.  I like how he explains that entrepreneurship is a way of thinking.  In the embedded lectures, I have learned a few things too. I hope that from this class I will learn things that will help me become a Human Resources Director, the field I am pursuing.  If thinking like and learning to be an entrepreneur without actually becoming one will make me a great HR Director then I am all for taking this class.

Assignment 2-A The Bug List:

Assignment 2A-The Bug List:

1. Shower heads that do not put out enough water velocity to get the shampoo out of my hair.
Why it exists? Environmental agencies regulated to slow down the amount of water per minute that is allowed to exit the shower head.

2. Small throat on my sewing machine preventing me from quilting a large quilt with ease.
Why it exists? At the time of the making of my machine there was no idea that a larger throat was needed for the quilting world.

3. Lack of gun control laws on semi automatic weapons
Why it exists? people are afraid of losing some archaic, out of control privilege lobby and spend copious amounts of money to ensure that congress or those in charge will never pass anything to outlaw the use of these machines.

4. Glasses for reading.
Why it exists? We get old and our eyes degrade and are unable to do their jobs anymore.

5. Being overworked
Why it exists? Companies are trying to make more of a profit so they are reducing staffing as much as possible but not reducing workload.

6. Walmart home office making changes that do not work
Why it exists? They do not work in the stores so do not understand how something really works.  They are also, again, trying to save money and do not care about if it works or not.

7. Poor workmanship on new couch that tore on the first week of ownership.
Why it exists? cheap labor begets cheaply made products.

8. Rising gas prices
Why it exists? Oil is drying up so they can now charge outrageous prices for it.

9. Donald Trump as our president
Why it exists? A bunch of angry people, who have been wronged by corporate America's greed, voted for someone they thought would stick it to the company's.

10. Dog and Cat hair all over the couch, carpet, clothes and well, everywhere.
Why it exists? I live in Texas.  It is hot.  The very long haired animals are hot too.  So they shed their beautiful fur all over everything.

11. The small size of my freezer. I have a lot of frozen goods and my freezer is always too full.
Why it exists? Someone set the standard that the freezer would just be smaller than the refrigerator and no one has changed it, even though we eat more frozen goods now days.

12.  Not being able to listen to my music while at work on the retail floor.
Why it exists? I would not be able to hear and take care of customers if I had my music blaring in my ears.

13.  Residual water on top of the dishes in the dish washer, even after a drying cycle
Why it exists? There are divots in certain dishes and water collects in them and the drying cycle is not powerful enough to get rid of the water.

14.  The dust that flies up and out of the trash can when I empty the bagless vacuum cleaner container
Why it exists? Bagless has to be emptied somehow and unless you wrap the trash bag around the container there is no where else for the massive about of dust to go.

15.  Standardized tests used in schools for the states and the other ones that are required to enter colleges today.
Why it exists? We are a society that needs to make sure all are even, or close to even so we have these tests to show normality.

16.  The cutting line divet on my rotary mat for quilting that does not heal on the "self-healing" mat.
Why it exists? A sharp razor blade is cutting through 1-6 layers of fabric and is being pushed on quite heavily onto the mat, through the layers of fabric.

17.  People at work using my fabric only scissors to cut cardboard, paper, tape and other crazy things
Why it exists? The people cannot find the proper scissors for their cutting needs, or they simply have no idea that using the fabric scissors to cut their stuff completely dulls or nicks the scissor blades.

18.  When the two liter bottle of coke goes flat
Why it exists?  We did not drink the coke fast enough

19.  Bills having to be paid every single month without exception
Why it exists?  Because the bill collectors need a pay check too so they can pay their bills

20.  Traffic lights that change to yellow even though there is NO ONE on the opposing street waiting or coming towards the light.
Why it exists? The lights are on a timer.

My Reflection:
I do not know if I am just very aware of my surroundings, or if I am just a grumpy, whiny, griping kind of person.  It did not take too long for me to come up with 18 "bugs".  I can always find the problem in things, or situations.  However figuring out the "Why it exists" was truly the difficult part of this assignment for me.   It was especially hard for me on #11.  I completely just guessed on why the freezer is always smaller than the refrigerator side.  I sat for many of these "bugs" trying to figure out why and it was truly frustrating that I had no idea on a few of them.  Even more frustrating was, the "bugs" that truly bugged me, were the ones I struggled the most with figuring out the "why it exists" aspect.  I think what I learned from this exercise is I get grouchy about "bugs" but I never really stopped and tried to find out the root cause, or even cared to try to figure out how to fix some of them.

Test Post for Principles of Entrepreneurship

Hello my name is Shae.  I am taking Principles of Entrepreneurship.  This is a test blog to make sure I am doing it right.
